A religious sect in Colossae endeavored to convince the Christian church that there were certain rules and regulations they had to follow in order to be holy and righteous. In Colossians 2:16-23, Paul explains that though legalist rules often have the appearance of holiness, they inescapably become a shadow of true Christianity; they become a "Do-It-Yourself Religion" that pales in comparison to the yoke of Jesus Christ.
